Speech and Debate

This is the official scholarship application for The Howling Yotes Debate team. As a team, we participate primarily in British Parliamentary debate (also called World's Style debate), both online and in-person; though we will occasionally engage with other models of debate for public and civic reasons. As a team, we work to explore Diversity, Community, and Professionalism in an applied context--in order to develop students skills in reading, speaking, writing, researching, and critical inquiry.
Scholarship are for passionate, engaged students and are only available for students who are considering attending The College of Idaho for the first time. Award amounts may vary based on several factors.

What are some of your concerns about participating in the Howling Yotes collegiate debate?
The College of Idaho speech and debate team welcomes both members with previous speech and debate experience, as well as those who haven't previously competed, but are interested in pursuing debate.
Please describe your previous accomplishments in speech and debate, or explain why you are interested in pursuing debate at The College of Idaho. Then describe an experience where you felt you put your debate skills into action OR you can choose to describe how you believe debate skills might benefit you in the future.
The College of Idaho debate team focuses primarily on extemporaneous debate. This means that you are assigned a side to debate, and given a topic (15-30 minutes) beforehand. You will then compose your arguments, and deliver a speech about the topic (current events, or philosophical questions).
What past experiences do you have that would signal your ability to participate in this type of activity?
The College of Idaho Howling Yotes core values are Diversity, Community, Diversity, and Professionalism. What do these values mean to you, and how can you help cultivate them within our community?
